I’m ripped from the blanket of blissful sleep as Aurelio startles me awake. “What’s wrong?” I ask, desperately trying to bring the blur into focus. Pale, sweating, and likely gearing up for another outburst, I fight the urge to run and take cover and instead touch his forehead. Still so hot. Shit. It’s cold water time. I stumble up to the bathroom and rip the towels from the cabinet to soak under the faucet. I need someone to come check on us soon, this isn’t just helping someone bathe and eat, well, and fuck nearly to death, he could be critical. The mirror catches me as I walk by and touch the forming knot at my temple. I retract with a gasp. The bastard beat my ass and it hurts now that I’m not being fed copious amounts of violent sex chemicals. My fingers trail down to touch the new collar. No buzzer. A thrill rises in my belly. No more Marco. The thought of new prospects excites me. If Aurelio becomes attached to me, he’ll protect me. He could begin to trust me and someday I might be able to escape this place.

The key turns in its lock and the door opens. One of Solomon’s men comes inside holding a tray. I run out with a finger to my lips. He sets it on the table. “Hey, you need to get Solomon up here or he’s gonna die.” I point at the shaking mass lying on the floor.

“I’ll send the message,” says the soldier. I look him over and note the bulge at his hip. The weapon hidden within its holster is something I’d very much like to have. “Anything else to report?” He has hard features and an unwavering sense of duty. Shooting him would be more fun than usual, I think.

My attention snaps back up. “Um. I need lady things brought to the room please.”

He squints. “Like—”

“Yes. They’re in a bathroom in the slave quarters.” I ask him for these things because I want him to come back in a few minutes and I want time to think. If I hit him over the head, I could take his gun. But even if I shot everyone that came at me, there’s nowhere near enough bullets to kill everyone onboard. I’d have to make it down to the jet skis floating near the open compartment bar. If he had a cell phone, that would almost be more helpful. I could possibly call the police. Although, I have little idea of where I am.

“Okay,” he says with a note of suspicion, seeming to read my thoughts. He exits, locking the door behind him. Knowing they’re coming back is almost a comfort to me as I place the cool towels over Aurelio’s head and chest. His face flushes and a deep grimace follows.

“Hey,” I lull. “You need to hydrate, Aurelio.” I grab the glass on the nightstand and fill it with fresh water from the tray. His glassy eyes barely track my movement as I lift his head to drink.
